My two Akhal Teke stallions completed the Shine and Shine Only 25 mile
novice endurance ride in San Jose, CA, this weekend. RRR Stolichnaya, a 16
hh, 5 year old dappled golden buckskin, did a 25 miler last season, spent
the winter in dressage training, and is now being trained and campaigned by
Becky Hart and Judith Ogus, at whose facility he will also stand at stud.
He'll compete in his first 50 miler next month....last weekend's rider,
dressage trainer Peter Haan, had a heck of a lot of horse left after a
moderately fast 25 miles. (He also had a moderately studly acting horse on
his hands....manageable, but definitely noticed the girls)

RRR Russia, a 16hh, 4 year old iridescent mahogany bay, was a perfect
gentleman every moment of the ride, drinking muzzle to muzzle with the
ladies at troughs and streams, standing tied next to a (Russian
Orlov/arabian cross) mare at my trailer, nibbling hay at the vet checks
surrounded by horses and people who probably never guessed he was a colt.
He's not shy, but is elegantly self-contained. I was thrilled with his
performance as I rode with his two older, more conditioned stable mates on
his first competition. He's being bred to a few arabians, Russian
Orlov/arab crosses and a national show horse mare at home at Ricochet Ridge
this spring. Can't wait til next year!

Both of these colts run loose at pasture with small herds of geldings,
friendly, playful, and totally non-aggressive. RRR Asaletta, my 4 year old
15.3hh, bright bay Akhal Teke mare, sired by the same stallion as Russia,
and out of the same dam as Stolichnaya, is currently being conditioned on
the trail and in the arena. Their photos and a compete description of their
history and lineages will be on my ranch homepage by later this week.

I saw Julie Suhr's Akhal Teke/arab cross mare last weekend on the 50....she
looks wonderful. I'd love to hear from other folks who are riding them.
