Just a point of interest on the barrel racer who is now a quad. I doubt if she
became a quad because the horse stepped on her head. Unfortunately helmets do
not prevent broken neck or backs. Those are usually caused by the impact, such
as when Christopher Reeve, who was wearing all the right protective gear,
hyperextended his neck in the landing because his hands were tangled up in the
reins, and he couldn't cushion or change the angle of impact.

What helmets are good for is preventing head injuries, as discussed in the last
few days. While most people don't die from broken bones, they do die from
broken heads.
