Tevis has 17,040 feet of climbing and 21,970 feet of descent according to the
94 participants guide. Normal AERC rides around Southern California have from
4000 to 9000 feet of climbing and descent in 50 miles. One has only about 600
feet and another has about 11,000 feet. These gains have come from hours going
over Topo maps and using an Avocet Vertech on the rides. I feel pretty good
about my numbers within 10 to 15%.

Thanks for the response Jim. The thought had gone through my mind about the
Avocet. I know someone that has one but he uses it for hiking. He is not
into horse activities. However, it was interesting hearing from him about
the features and capabilities, including rate of climb and rate of descent
information.

I have dropped by REI and glanced at one in the counter display out here
in the San Fernando Valley (California). It was interesting to me to see
something on the front of it that looks like a static port on the side of
some general aviation aircraft. (For those unfamiliar with it, the static
port is intended to allow the air pressure to be measured as if the air
craft were standing still. Hence altitude can be derived from that).

Might be interesting to see how many folks make use of this device and what
there experiences with it have been.

Anyone that has one care to comment?
