I have been carrying a lead rope on the trail for (literally) decades in the
following manner with no problems and a great deal of convenience.

The rope: a thin braided-type nylon lead with non-heavy-duty snap.

The attachment: Attach the snap to bridle/halter ring. Pass lead around off
side of horse's neck and bring it around to the front of the neck on the near
side. Form a hangman's noose, adjusting the length to hang comfortably
around the horse's neck. To prevent the section of lead from the
bridle/halter to the base of the neck from swinging around, after you've tied
the hangman's noose, de-attach the snap and reattach it on the ring of your
breastplate, or somewhere on the front of the saddle.

The reason for using the hangman's noose are:

* Properly tied, won't come undone
* Stays flat and neat, no bulky knot
* Useful to grab going uphill for extra stability (saves on horse's mane for
those with a tight-gripping fist

OK OK, I was afraid you were going to ask me how to tie a hangman's noose.
Sorry, words fail, but if you e-mail me directly with your fax number or
mailing address, I'll attempt to make a drawing.
