[endurance] My mare just tied-up, help!

I need your knowledge and wisdom. My mare April, an 8 yo Morab was diagnosed
yesterday by the vet as having tied-up. She can hardly walk. How did it
happen? a combination of things: she was moved to a new pen a couple of
hundred yards up the hill three days prior; she had been walked at halter on
a dirt-gravel road twice in previous week without shoes on; the weather
turned cold and windy (by California standards) two days after her move (she
was not clipped and had a blanket on). She is now on bute and her blood test
shows very high levels of white cells. What really caused this? does it
cause permanent damage to muscles? she was given to us last fall completely
unbroke and she is slowly being trained. I am hoping to do endurance with
her when she is ready. Is this tie-up thing chronic meaning an end to any
hope for endurance? Anything you can tell me will help. Thanks a bunch.
