[endurance] Hives revisited

Hi All--
Our Kasey has had two separate (unrelated??) incidents with hives. Once
when we moved him to a new location (better pasture on an alfalfa field that
had been hayed out for the season, specially formulated feed mix that was
similar to what we were already feeding--but not exactly the same). He
broke out all over his body, tho' he did not seem unduly uncomfortable, nor
itchy. He was recovering from a bout with Lymes (we think) so we attributed
the hives to a residual effect of that couse of treatment. We did not give
any anti-histamines and the problem resolved itself in a few days.

Then we did the Patapsco 30 in the Fall (cool, few bugs) and at the end of
the ride his entire back was covered with welts. He wasn't ouchy with them,
but we had tried a Woolback pad with the Sharon Saare saddle and I'm
thinking he may have had a reaction to the pad. Again the problem resolved
itself in a few days. Now I've started to ride Kasey (he's really Kevin's
horse, but I condition him) and I'm using a nice cotton fleece pad that fits
really well and has caused no problems.

So, of course, I'm worried that he may be prone to hives under multiple
situations. I can see that excess protein can cause hives...and can it
trigger a reaction under different circumstances down the line? Or are we
dealing with a once-and-done thing?

At least I know now to keep an eagle-eye out for possible trigger situations.

Diane (it was supposed to be in the 50's, so instead we had a bout of wet
snow, drizzle--we rode anyway, darn it!)
