[endurance] Nasty Mares

I have been following the discussion on "Nasty Mares" with great interest.
Lori, after having ridden virtually nothing but mares for the last 10-12
years was about to give up and ride only geldings a couple of years ago. We
even sold a lovely yearling filly in 1990 out of Risque Rocket so she
wouldn't have to ride another mare!

In 1992, before giving up on all the years of training she had put into her
then current mare, we tried Regumate with some success. After having a
brush with the aformentioned "female problems" after getting some on her
skin, as well as deciding a daily regimen was a real pain, we tried the
"implants".

We have used Synovex for about 3-4 years now with no adverse side effects.
I noticed Mike Tomlinson did not address it, and may be aware of some
downside in its use. For us, however, it made a mare that was virually
unable to compete through much of her cycle into a much more tractable and
usable mount. Had this not worked, we would probably have spayed her, she
was that bad.

These are my impressions only, after having used it on our own horses. It
was not available when I was in practice and thus did not use it on clients
horses. You will have to check with your local veterinarian as to whether
this is legal in you state or something you want to try.

I would be interested in comments from those who may have some information
on the down side as I have seen virually none in my limited experience with it.
