I couldn't agree more about the truck issue. I have gone through several
1/2 ton trucks that just couldn't handle the weight of the trailers.
Even when I pulled the two horse trailer. I had a problem with
transmissions too. I now have a one ton-in the shop now, but has nothing
to do with hauling-and I love it. I kind of cringe when I buy gasoline,
but I don't have to worry about not making it up the hills or down the
road. I really worry about people that haul to rides with small trucks knowing that the
trailer and horses out weigh the truck. When I was younger, we had a
trailer snap the hitch at the bumper, and the trailer and two horses
rolled down an embankment. The bumper was badly bent, and caused the
hitch to snap. Luckily, the horses were unhurt, even got into the trailer
we brought to haul them home in, but we learned a valuable lesson. Now,
I use a receiver hitch, no more pulling from the bumper, unless it is
reinforced for that specific purpose.
Too often, I think that people will overlook the safety aspects of their
rigs, thinking that they will be ok. It is something that everyone
should think about.
