[endurance] Endurance footwear and stirrups

I was recently talking to my buddy Janet at the Australian Connection
about footwear, and she told me about some off road running shoes
called "trail runners". They are running shoes designed for trail and
dirt use- the nuts who run the Western States 100 mile run use them. I
bought a pair from a company called One Sport, and tried them out on
the horse. I wore them at the Las Vegas and Death Valley multi day
rides, and boy, am I hooked. They are very comfortable, and have a lot
more strength than normal running shoes. You can still run very
easily with them, and they offer more protection than the Millers type
of shoes. They are slightly heavier than running shoes, and do not
have a heel, but I have found them to be very good for endurance.

I also use the neat wide padded aluminum stirrups from Performance
Products in California. They are superb stirrups, and have kept my
feet very happy. I did have one problem with them, however, that cost
me a finish. My dopey horse decided to roll with the saddle on, and
while doing so he rolled over on top of one of the stirrups. He
crushed it so flat that I could not get my foot into it. It never
occurred to me to worry about that, but it seems there is no end to
what can happen at rides. I highly recommend the aluminum stirrups,
but don't let your pony roll with them on!
