In the UK most people have to ride on the roads to some extent.
In fact, traditionally horses brought up from grass would spend
the first few weeks just walking on roads.

Almost all our rides include some road work (tarmac roads), often
without any verges, so we have to do some training on roads.
I think about 15% roadwork on a ride is fairly average in this
area. Bascially, I make up time where I can and stick to a walk or
slow trot on the roads.

Cars do get to close and often don't slow down enough, but I don't
think I've ever had anyone deliberatly hassle me. Our youngster is
bombproof, but his mum still has problems with heavy lorries and
double decker buses, especially coming up behind her. She is much
more confident when he is around though.
