[endurance] stifle problems

If any of you have had experience with a horse with stifle problems I would
like to hear from you.

My 10 year old arab gelding, crabbet bred, 14' 2 hands had a sudden onset of
lameness last August in his right rear leg. The lameness is intermittent and
when it is obvious he is unable to move the leg forward very far. He can
stretch it out behind him with no difficulty. When he is lunged to the right
he hippity hops. The leg has been blocked from stifle on down and the
lameness remained. Plus, the stifle was injected with an internal blister
treatment and still no change. He has been chiropractered and this vet
thought he might be suffering from lyme disease (he tested positive), so was
on daily intravenous injections of tetracycline for three weeks. The
lameness went away for a couple of months and is now back.

I am interested in getting feed back from anyone who has had surgery done on
the medial patellar (ligament is cut through), and how long it took to heal
and if you were able to go back to distance riding. Magic has been ridden on
both competitive (ECTRA) and a couple of endurance rides. He has never been
raced. I'm in Virginia and will have to wait for the snow to leave before we
can reevaluate the lameness again. Hard to see it in 30" of snow. The
lameness showed up before the snow arrived so I know he has not injured the
leg from hauling himself through the snow cover.
