[endurance] Arabian Research On-Line

I've gotten a bunch of requests for information on how to do Arabian
research on-line so I'm posting to the list.

The Arabian Horse Registry has decided that the Internet is not secure
and so they will not consider allowing access via that method. If you
disagree please call or write and complain. <g> Things I have suggested
are that there exist very secure Internet systems (Macinstosh based
systems for example have, to the best of my knowledge, never been hacked
into at all) and that they ought to consider making a mirror of the db
avail for public access. That way they won't worry so much about their db
getting corrupted and it would be easier to use.

If you wish to do on-line research you must have a registry Owner Number.
Call the registry and ask for Mr. Ron Ballantine. He'll get you set up
with an account etc.

The access is via telnet and is charged to your owner number. It's $15
per month minimum plus a per minute fee that I can't remember.

The programs and database access are archaic at best. All caps, cryptic
commands that are not intuitive at all and forget anything resembling a
GUI. <sigh> You are working with the live AHR database in a read only
mode. It helps to have your horse names & numbers all lined up so you can
do a few quick searches and get out. I tend to capture the session to a
file but the control characters are a PITA to remove so don't count on it
working well for automatic input to a pedigree analysis program.
