Hello, to add to Joe Long's excellent reply re: tying up or azouturia (sp?).
Mares in heat can be more prone to this syndrome, a sudden weather
change-such as going from humid conditions to dry & cold very suddenly,
cantering early in the ride without proper warmup, can all contribute to this
syndrome. Maggie Price, at the Southern 100 in Illinois in '94 mentioned she
had come up with a whole list of possible contributing factors. To this end,
I have fed DMG for years, as it's said to reduce lactic acid buildup. I do
not know if there are as yet any clinical data to support this. I use this
as my only supplement, but suspend giving it for several days before a ride.
