A member of the Santa Monica Mountains Trail Council asked me to put this
over the internet immediately. If you ride in So. Cal and use this trail the
following is of interest to you.

Please send letters to PROTEST the opening to mountain bikes the Will Rogers
portion of the Backbone Trail (includes Chicken Ridge). The trail is not
safe for multi use and hikers and horsemen are in danger. This trail is
narrow with drop offs along the edges as well as heavy brush hanging over
trail. The trail has limited visability along the level portions due to
trees and schrubs extending over the trail.

Trails that are open for multi use should have standards that are used for
criteria. Trails should not be open for multi use just by arbitrarly
decisions or influenced by lobbying of special interest groups.

The trail should not be considered a moto cross track for mountain bikers.
This trail is the gateway to the Backbone Trail and should not become a
dangerous speed thrill for the bikers that precludes other trail users
enjoying it.

Please send protests to: Dan Preece, Superintendent Angeles District
