Roxanne,

I feel compelled to address your statement that you have never known a rider
to deliberately stress a horse. You must have a different view of
"deliberate" than I do. I have seen horses clearly overriden to the point
of collapse, requiring intensive veterinarian treatment to recover. Rare?
Yes. But it does happen. Novice riders? Yes. Do they benefit from
counsel? Not usually because these are the people who blow into endurance
riding with their wonder horse who can run for 100 miles with no food or
water (in their opinion of course), they do a few fast rides, the horse goes
lame or gets into serious metabolic problems, and they quickly disappear
from endurance riding. Tragically it is these people who are
misrepresenting our sport. Fortunately they are few and far between. But
if you have never seen one in 25 years, you must have not been at the some
of the same rides I've been to.
