thought i would share some comments on the bandera, tx
ride that i took part in over the weekend. it was 2 days
with a 25/50/75 each day.

on friday - of the nine 75 milers - only 2 were able to complete
in the allowed 18 hours(10 minutes to spare). of the 50s - none
were able to
complete in the 12 hours. and of the 25 milers - only nine
completed in the 6 hours. the second day - no 75 milers entered -
perhaps based on the first day - and the course was changed for
the 50 milers. most did complete the second day. darolynn butler
was the winning 75 miler and bc the first day.

it is a hilly and rocky area in some parts - but there were
also lots of areas to do a good trot. on the second day -
where we got a replacement road stretch that was a measured
12.2 miles - most were able to do that in 1:10 even with some
hills.

my questions are

1. is there any rule that allows a longer time if the conditions
are "exceptional"? it seems a waste to have so many people ride
w/o even a completion.

2. this was not the case here where the holds were 30, 45, 30 on the 50
but it seems that if the holds get lengthened for any reason - this
comes out of your riding time. it would seem counterproductive
have a longer hold time for a solid reason and then less time
to ride.

the ride was pleasant and well run but frustrating for the first
day people. it was beautiful country to get to see from horseback.
