I use a Desoto Custom Saddle, and the fit is pretty much the same as what
you are describing. My two horses that the saddle fits, have gone
through many changes, but their confirmation never changes. My Appy
mare has had three babies, and gone through another change as we were
weaning, and fitting her for endurance after the babies. She never had a
problem with the saddle not fitting her, even with some weight drop just
prior to weaning and during weaning of the third foal. Since I started
using the desoto, I have never had less than an A on back on any horse
that I use this saddle on. I am a heavyweight rider, over 200 before my
saddle, and I think this really tells me that the saddle fits the horse.
My old Appy gelding went through being fat in the pasture after a year
lay-off, and when I brought him back out, except for having to get a
BIGGER girth, the saddle still fit him perfectly. As for a pad, we use
only a thin felt pad under the saddle, and there is not as much problem
with too much heat build up--I ride in the southeast region where the
heat and humidity are legendary.
