[endurance] strangles

My vet. clinic administers a Strangles vaccination as a standard
vaccination and when I first bought my mare she had a very severe
reaction to her vaccinations (Flu like symptoms, extremely sore
and stiff in the neck, and off for minimum of a weeks time). She'd
never been vaccinated for Strangles before, so I asked my Vet
whether the vaccination was really necessary. I was told that
yes, the Strangles vaccination can give your horse strangles, They
recommend the vaccination for people that travel with their horses,
and expose them to many other horses, but if it is caught and
treated right away it shouldn't be any more severe than the actual
vaccination. I see my horse everyday and am very tuned-in to
anything out of the ordinary so I opted to not have the vaccination
any longer, and now my mare shows no complications with her other
vaccinations.
