[endurance] drinking water and bran

Question sort of on the subject of drinking.

I posted this question before, and didn't really get an answer.
We are going on a ride this weekend, and Saturday will do a 16
mile loop, then make about a 2 to 3 hour drive home. I willhave
water back at the trailer, but my mare may not drink. However,
she will willingly slurp down vast quantities of soupy bran mash.

So. my question is, how much bran at any one point is too much?
3 gallons, two gallons? This is one way to get water into her,
but will the bran cause problems? At Camp Far West, over the course
of 2 days, I went through almost a 5 gallon bucket of bran, with
no ill effects.

In the recent endurance news there is a letter in the mailbag
by James G. Helfer of Advanced Biological Concepts who says,
"What bran is often used as an ingredient in wet feeds. Wet bran,
however, has an extreme calcium phosphorus imbalance which makes
it an unsound nutritional ingredient. If you are trying to add
water to the feed, beet pulp is a superior product and it has other
nutritional benefits.
