[endurance] drinking

Just a word of caution to new riders. Several of the emails have indicated
that its ok to ignore your horse not drinking. To a point this is ok. After
a point a downward spiral starts where the horse needs water, but he
doesn't drink, and the more he needs water the more he ,or she, or it,
doesn't want to drink.

I to have a horse that would not drink. He thinks his job is to go, and go,
and go. He was always loosing points on dehydration, but he did sip here
and there. He has now learned to drink with the encouragement of a salty
carrott each day. I had to be very carefull with him in the begining.

Back to my original point watch your horse. Learn how to check for
dehydration yourself. Take all of the good advice presented by the the
riders, but remember its your horse,. They are all individuals with
different drinking habits. Your concern is excellent. Always keep one eye
on your horse's metabolic signs, and the other on the trail, and if you
happen to have another eye, keep that one on your metabolic signs. Happy
trails!
