It seems as though sometimes we need to be hit over the head not once by
many, many times before we see the whole picture. Here in So Cal, we have
seen repeated fire and flood, and have climbed out of the rubble of the
devastating Northridge quake- all within 3 years. Sounds like a long time?
It's not, especially when so very many people are not prepared to take care
of themselves let alone their helpless animals. We have pets by choice, but
their care thusly is NOT by choice. We owe it to them to be prepared for any
eventuality. Our hearts go out to the people of Pt Reyes, as we have borne
the cost inlife and time from the malibu, Topanga and Green Meadow fires,
only to be followed on the heels by the floods and the quake. The city of
Agoura Hills chartered years ago the Disaster Response Team (DRT). A
fledgling arm of this volunteer group is our Mouted Search and Rescue Unit of
which we are a part. We have had the humbling honor if you will of rescuing
several hundred horses from the 1993 fires as well as many from the floods as
well. In addition, we include the search and resuce of persons in the Santa
Monicas. This is truly a work of love- for the animals and our fellow
citizens. In the interest of the importance of being prepared to save one's
self and one's family and friends, please, PLEASE BE PREPARED! Have your
animals prepared. And consider your own system of community response,
because, people, these disasters are not going to go away. Sorry for the long
wind. Bless you all1
