just posting a quick (not complete) Wolverine (Michigan) ride results from
this past weekend. Shelly Dake on Takis Rama won the 50 and Best Condition!
)Way to go Shelly!) I don't know who won the 100, but i did check in with
Bonnie Kaufman's husband when she had only 13 miles left to go and he said
she was doing fine and should be 2nd
or 3rd he thought. I know there was someone there from Pennsylvania who did
not complete, (sorry, I don't know her name) but did have a nice chat with
her mom! Anyhow, the weather was terrible with hot and humid weather all
weekend. Also torrential rain on Saturday morning 1 hour into the ride, with
unbelievable sun and humidity later in the afternoon while riding. Tough on
horses. I heard at one point that they had pulled 16 100 and 50 milers and
that was early afternoon. Someone else I'm sure out there has far better
results than these.
I also have a question. I pulled my horse at 38 miles due to a bad CRI and
gut sounds of "C". Zee's CRI was 13/18 and his pulse upon arrival at the
check was 12. When I called for a check, the vet had him at 17! I spoke
with Dr Beecher at the awards and he suggested that i should have slow
trotted into the check, as the sun was baking us and he felt perhaps Zee
would have handled the heat better if he trotted a little more while in the
direct sun, and walk in the shade. All you humidity riders (Truman) out
there have any suggestions? I felt that with respirations so high, I should
shut him down and walk in to the checks---? Anyhow, not wanting to take ANY
chances, i pulled Zee after getting the CRI results. Today I have a happy,
sound, healthy guy to ride again in 2 weeks. 2 other riders were still
fighting with the vet at the same check even as their horses were being
loaded into the trailer. I grieved for our sport at that moment. I'm sure
every ride has their share of complainers, as ours usually do, but to argue
non-stop for over 40 minutes is stupid. I thought the horse came first
guys!! Enough for now. I would sure appreciate any suggestions on how to
compensate for this type of ride condition in the future. Very unusual for
northern Michigan and took us all by surprise!
