standardbred pulse higher???

have just started helping condition a horse for a friend. the horse is half
arab and half national showhorse. the horse is supposed to be in reasonable
condition but my heart monitor shows a higher pulse rate than i would expect
during trot and canter. my first thought was that the horse was not in
as good condition as we thought. higher means 25 bpm more than my arab.

but the recovery rate at the end of a 10 mile ride in low 80s and medium
to high humidity was excellent. below 60 two minutes after
i got off. we had walked the last 1/2 mile in.

anyone know if standardbreds may have a higher exercising pulse rate than
a similar arab? we tried changing the position from leading to following
and it made only a small difference.
