Re: [RC] Eating at rides - Chipnml

I used to be the same way due to nerves.  I'd just look at food and get sick.  To this day even the thought of anything chocolate or peanut butter during a ride (which I normally LOVE) makes me feel like throwing up.  That's why I suggested those energy foods. They are a lot of calories in a small package so you don't need to choke down as much.  I've found the fruit flavored Power Gel to go down very easily. I really go overboard in what I bring along to eat, because I'm never sure what will appeal to me.  On the other hand, some of the most experienced riders I know still throw up on occasion.  Bonnie Mielke, who has over 20,000 miles, told me she almost always throws up on 100 mile rides, and that she's learned to do it off her saddle without messing anything up!  You just have to keep trying stuff until you find something that works.

For some of us, eating while riding is very difficult.  My stomach just cannot tolerate food very well when I ride.  I have acid reflux which is the major cause of the problem.  I remember one ride where I ate a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and followed it with a bottle of melon flavored Gatorade.  I felt much better about 1/2 mile out of the hold, the food just didn't stay down.  To this day, melon Gatorade is off the list.

I did discover Ensure.  It goes down well and will clear my stomach quickly, so my stomach doesn't get upset.  The liquid yogurt drinks are OK too, but I have to eat less of them because they can be heavy.  There are many of us who eating is a problem, we are not just being picky.  I rode with a friend who ate a ham sandwich, Doritos and washed it all down with a Mountain Dew.  I was getting sick just watching him eat.
