[RC] Beet Pulp Experiment - Elizabeth WalkerOK folks, here are the results of my experiment. Feel free to re-run the
experiment in order to reproduce the results. We can then publish in a
peer-reviewed journal. :)
Semi-seriously, I did *not* dry the beet pulp shreds in the oven, or check the
humidity, or check the sugar residue, etc. I also did not measure the amount
of water that remained after soaking. I figure nobody else is going to do that
on a practical basis.
Equipment:
Digital kitchen food scale, accurate to about 0.02 pounds (or 2 small
extruded pellets - beet pulp pellets are 'medium' sized.)
1 quart liquid measuring cup
colander
Various containers: 12 cup tupperware, 4 quart feed tub, 3 new freezer
bags
Procedure:
Zeroed out the scale with the empty bag, measured out 1/2 lb of pellets
or shreds into the bag. Measured the volume of each, and placed into soaking
container. Added hot tap water to each, and soaked overnight. (Both had
plenty of excess water remaining in the morning). Drained each using the
colandar, and pressed out excess water. Measured the soaked volume (packed)
and placed into freezer bag. Used a clean, empty freezer bag to zero the
scale, and weighed the soaked product.
Results:
Shreds:
Dry Weight: 0.5 lbs
Dry Volume: 2 1/3 cups (550 ml)
Soak Water: 8 cups, hot from tap
Soaked Volume: 4 cups (1 quart)
Soaked Weight: 1.6 lbs
Pellets:
Dry Weight: 0.5 lbs
Dry Volume: 1 1/3 cups (300 ml)
Soak Water: 12 cups
Soaked Volume: 5 1/3 cups
Soaked Weight: 2.41 lbs
