Re: [RC] Silage - Diane Trefethen

Don't underestimate the durability of a horse's stomach. My two have gotten hold of some pretty moldy hay, despite my best efforts to stop them, with no discernible effects.

It is my understanding that the biggest threat from moldy hay isn't from eating it. It's from breathing the mold spores. So if you discard moldy hay anywhere that your horses might reach, be sure to pull it apart and scatter it well.

I am talking about plain vanilla moldy hay, not hay infected with one of the more well known but rare molds that are poisonous to horses. Also, there are poisonous molds that are particular to certain hays, such as fescue (not a good choice for horse hay).

My horses do not like to eat hay that tastes bad and they get plenty so they don't feel they have to. Still, the buggers WILL occasionally get into where they shouldn't.
