Re: [RC] Silage - Barbara McCrary

We have fed our cattle moldy hay that I wouldn't put anywhere near a horse. I don't really remember where I came by the information, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. We've never lost a cow from moldy hay. If it's REALLY bad, we just toss it.

Some of the horse people I met in Las Cruces, NM, were feeding their horses
silage. They said it had little food value but it was cheap and it kept the
horses busy. An eating horse is a happy horse, so I went on the net to
background it. Some vet school or schools said that some silage was
poisonous or had fungus in it or something, I don't remember what but it was
nasty, so I figured I'd pass. For almost as long as I've had horses I've
been told that you can feed cattle mouldy hay that would sicken a horse.
