The horse industry contributes $14 million to Pickens County, said County Administrator J. Chappell Hurst. "There’s over 2,700 horses in this county," he said. The county hopes to benefit from a new initiative from the SC Department of Agriculture. The "50 by 20" project aims "to increase the state's agricultural industry by $50 billion by 2020," Hurst said. "Because of this program there are numerous grants and funding mechanisms that are available at this time," he said. "The idea is to add an agricultural component to the development of cross country, endurance and steeplechase courses. There's a lot of money out there."
