[RC] Australian stats - Michael Maul

In reaponse to:"However, when we questioned whether this had any effect on equine fatalities, nobody seemed to have a clue. So...What is the number of endurance related equine fatalities in Australia over the past 10 years? How many starts over the past 10 years? What are the number of FEI endurance related fatalities and starts over the past 10 years?. Once we can get these ratios and then look at them next to our numbers we will have a better sense of the data pro or con for this proposed change."

These are very useful questions and I've asked them of a national organization but w/o knowing the conditions that the organization considers as a fatality - the results would be useless.

For example AERC considers a horse as a fatality if it is related in anyway to a ride. The horse may have an accident prior to the ride at the camp, expire weeks after the ride, or not even be entered in the ride but simply present at the camp.

Other organizations may consider a fatality to be counted only if the horse is entered and competes. And may only count if the the fatality happens during the ride - not some period of time after the ride.

I tried for 2 years to get fatality and start statistics from AERA to make a valid comparison and was unsuccessful.

Before I would consider something like a logbook and sanctions used by another organization, I'd need to see data that shows there is a reason for a really significant change like this.

My personal feeling is that the fatality statistics if counted the same way per 1,000 starts would be no different for an organization that has a lot of rules and sanctions to AERC's much looser set of rules.
