[RC] Thrush prevention? - k s swigartOkay, I am going to take a survey here? How many people besides me have no problems with thrush, and don't do any of the things that any of the people here who have talked preventing thrush do? Granted, I live in a part of Southern California, which is "semi-arid" (which couldn't be proved by this week's rains).? But I have found that if you ride your horse regularly, even picking out feet entails nothing more than a cursury exam before riding to make sure that there are no rocks stuck in the foot (rarely ever do I do anything more than LOOK at the horses' feet). Mostly, I find that my horses' feet are clean by the end of a ride, no matter how much may have been packed in there at the start. I do keep a bottle of Thrush Buster (which I have had for years. so that tells you about how much of it I use) which I will stick in the sluices of the frog if I think that there is a problem (which I rarely ever do).? I USED to use plain old Clorox bleach for this (which is dirt cheap), but one bottle of Thrush Buster every 6-7 years is inconsequentially cheap too and a LOT more convenient to both store and apply. So, I guess I am interested to know....just how many people IS thrush a problem for?? 'Cuz it certainly hasn't ever caused me any problems, and it ain't because I am meticulous about picking out my horse's feet or regular treatment, or anything like that. Although it MAY have something to do with the fact that almost never are my horses standing in any kind of wet conditions for any length of time. For those of you who DO have an ongoing problem with thrush, what are your horses' living conditions, and what do or don't you DO (it may be that you are doing too much????)? For those of who don't, what are your horses' living conditions, and what do or don't YOU do? I wonder if the reason that I don't have a problem with thrush is that I don't obsess about it and just let the horse's feet take care of themselves....or if I am just lucky. And if I am just lucky, am I the only lucky one on Ridecamp (I am know I am not the only lucky in the horse world, since I know LOTS of people around these parts who do no more than I do and have no more problem with thrush than I do). kat Orange County, Calif. :) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
