[RC] hoof tougheners/thrush prevention - Cindy Collins - Roger RittenhouseI have used Delta CROSSAPOL over the years. It is a formaldehyde based product formalinIt is 'like' Kertex. I used that also but it is about 2x the cost. I use to get the Crossapol at dealer/ws cost and re-sell it. Most riders did not buy it. I had a 3 bottles left in stock- wrote them off. I use it about 3 times a week during the riding season. I decided the dab on system was messy. I use a small spray bottle to cover the sole and frog. Brush it in with a tooth brush.. Then WASH my hands.. or I wear gloves. I 'think' it works. For thrush its wide open. Hanging out -lurking -on a few BF forums, they use lots of stuff. Some complex and costly. The easy to use products are the good ole Kopertox.. but the zealots will say it kills good tissue. I use it-. :) I also use apple cider vinegar and Lysol. 2 oz concentrated Lysol to a qt of ACV. Cheap and it does appear to help. If I have a bad case of thrush or some whiteline, I use a mix of athlete foot cream (fungus and yeast prevention 2 or 3 different products) triple antibiotic, toss in some red phenol and some ABC Dys.. sort of a shot gun approach. I tried Tammy's 'magic' stuff. Worked about the same as my DIY and my stuff was cheaper. I have used the tube of Thrush Magic. The high dollar product from Naomi Peterson .. YES it did work. Costly. I used it get things under control then went to my daily low cost control products. This also worked wonders on scratches better then anything else On my list to try is the the Crocket D product. .that is next. Mostly for scratches but should work the same on thrush. Of course now that I have the 3 going well BF they have very little problems with white line or thrush. Heel down low, frogs on the ground.. The mule has issues since the mule foot is so dished the frogs do not hit the ground. I do tend to drop her heels more to get 'some' frog contact. I have to take more frog off of her then I like to open the thrush. As of now she has no active black goo thrush. Frogs look bad but we keep after them and keep them clean. I use a small soft wire brush to really get them clean.. looks like a tooth brush. Anything else does not strip out the debris The key is to get the frog tissue really clean. I spray on the ACV/Lysol and brush the heck out of the frog, then apply a stronger product IF I think it s required. My natural BF trimmer says to use the cheap DIY stuff or Koppertox . She also liked bleach 50/50.. Same old school methods I used years ago during the shod days. Just have to keep after the frogs at least 3 to 4 times a week if there is a problem. I do not use the soaks or the gas type products like Cleantrax.. to much trouble and cost. I have not seen a it do all that much, then my cheap stuff. Have also use Uckele Hoof Septic. That appears to be OK and not too costly. I sometimes use that as cleaner and pre-treatment spray. Washes out the crap. then apply other products as needed. I think some of the thrush products will help with toughing the sole and of course the frog.
