[RC] re: Mare Prejudice - Keith Kibler - Cindy Stafford
Hi Keith - you asked why people have mare prejudice...
I don't get it either, I say pay attention to the horse's personality and not the gender. My one mare is about as mellow as they come, and I can never tell when she's in heat (vet asked me once when her last cycle was - could've been years as far as I knew lol). She's got a no nonsense attitude that gives me confidence where ever we go.
Had a gelding once. He was pushy, in your space, kind of a brat.
Maybe the anti-mare people don't like the potential "moodiness" or unpredictability of mares? But seems rather generalizing and if you pay attention to the individual personality it shouldn't be a problem.
I know some people get concerned with mares tying up, especially in spring heat. But seems you can ask about the mares history of having that problem. I also know a gelding or two with the same problem.
