Re: [RC] Mare prejudice - Nancy Sturm

What is with mare prejudice?
If you say it is because they become too weird during season, please give some personal experience because we currently have 7 mares under saddle and that simply is not our experience in the real world.

I have always been a fan of a good gelding but I have owned and ridden some very nice mares. I just finished a season of shopping for a backup horse, having decided that my sweet Icelandic mares just are not cut out for distance riding. The majority of the horses for sale at reasonable prices were mares. After looking at a lot of horses I bought a five year Anglo-Arab mare. She's a lovely animal, very well bred on both sides. he's had six months training with an excellent trainer who described her as "a great little mare." She was very inexpensive. She'd been for sale for about nine months and I was the first person to go out to look at her. The seller was a few weeks off from donating her to the local high school equestrian team.

Regumate is a legal drug you can use for a mare who exhibits unpleasant heats but we notice that, like female distance runners, mares who are very fit and getting the kind of conditioning endurance horses normally get have very reduced "marish" behavior.
