RE: RC: Foot Angles

Darolyn,

One of the horses in my boarding barn is trimmed exactly as you wrote and is
kept barefoot year 'round (pleasure riding horse). He has the most unusual
gait. Picks his feet up and SLAPS 'em down. Kerplop, kerplop. He's just not
a very good mover. Looking at his feet, his toes just look too dang long. I
can't help but think that if he were trimmed a few more degrees to the
vertical that he'd be more comfortable and move nicer.

On angles of feet.... what they teach us in "barefootin" is 45ish in the
front, 55ish in the back. That is really quite different than what most
farriers do.... however, this angle is the natural angle for the coffin bone
& keeps it ground parallel and the foot much healthier even if you are going
to shoe. Those high heels & contracted frogs are murder on a horses foot &
everything u can do to keep that from happening will benefit you down the
road/trail.
