Re: [RC] Finish Line question for LD Riders - DESERTRYDR1

I've sat back and watched the LD rule change discussion, decided to weigh in
with my humble opinion. First, I got into the sport thinking I would never
do anything but LD. I have done several rides with times very close to the
six hour mark, including my first.

That was Rattlesnake Ridge back in 1996. I was riding with a more
experienced rider, and we were both on first ride horses. I was NOT prepared
for the start, we waited a bit before going out, but my mare could see those
horses across the grasslands, and she decided it was a race. Both our horses
took off running, until I fell off about a half mile into the ride. Got
myself put back together and my horse caught, and we went on. My girlfriend
had to stop and adjust tack (several times) and her horse was being silly.
Long story short, we left the vet check with one hour and ten minutes, and 10
miles left to go. We galloped our horses most of the way, and made it back,
then pulsed down in about 2 minutes.

This is NOT the way to do an LD, or any ride for that matter. My horse was
in really good condition at the time, probably could have easily done the 50,
but I certainly wasn't ready for that. The next ride, I came in OT. That's
the ride I learned that hold times count in the six hours. My friend's horse
would NOT cross the water after she was bumped in midstream by another horse
and scrambled back to the beginning side. I stayed and tried for an hour to
convince the horse to come across, tried ponying, whipping, everything we
could thing of. That was the ride I also learned to train your horse for
possible trail conditions BEFORE the ride. I got a completion T-shirt,
because the ride manager felt sorry for me.

    To be continued jeri
