Re: [RC] Road riding - AprJhn

Reminds me of the first time I took Tanna out on a long road ride. About 1/2 mile from our house, we ran into the first biker going the opposite direction we were. Trot, trot, spook, stare, "good morning!", trot, trot.

Apparently, I had chosen to ride on a race day. The race course was mapped out along the road. After a dozen or so bikes, Tanna quit spooking at the bikers and would just stare at them as we passed each other.

He was still spooking at stuff and spooking into the road though. Scared me a lot, but it was kinda nice that I had chosen to ride on the biker's race day because the cars were aware of having to share the road with smaller, slower vehicles and were a lot more considerate than they sometimes can be.

We rode 21 or 26 miles that day (I can't remember which). And part of our ride took us through the middle of our small town where the bikes started and ended. Lots of people and noise and tons of bikes. Excellent training situation. Tanna did great.

By the end of that ride, he was riding on the very edge of the road without letting his rear end drift into traffic. He was watching the bikes, but not spooking at them. Became very road saavy. He's been pretty good at road riding ever since. Just not the night road riding. We still have to get some time in doing that before he can calm down enough.
