Not quite the way I trained my Q.B. mare Scarlet, but similar, and it
DOES work. Scarlet is the most witchy, snotty mare I have had and the
whole herd knows to keep their distance. When we started saddle training,
way back when, it was also an issue with the other horses we rode with.
Now Scarlet has a very long wick when it comes to other horses in her space
while she's being ridden. She can even handle a strange horse on her butt
going down the trail for quite some time before it starts to tick her off.
The funny thing is how the rest of my herd has learned this. One day, my
nephew and I went into the pen to pet the horses and Lester asked to get up
on Scarlet, so I popped him up. Immediately one of the geldings moved in
close to get some attention too. Scarlet curled her lip, but did nothing -
not even twitched an ear! We petted both horses for a while. Then, the
second Lester slid off Scarlet, the gelding took off about 20 feet. He
just knew he was safe as long as there was a human on Scarlet's back, but
when she was on her own - watch out! I thought it was really cool and
smart of him to figure this out.
