Lassie was played by a male dog.  However, it was much easier to conceal the difference than it is with horses!!

Yeah,  I noticed that, too.  I was also kind of tickled when my 9-year-old great niece noticed that the mare in the kids' movie "Second Chance" was likewise played (at least part of the time--there were at least three different horses playing her role) by a gelding.
