I agree, anything from the knee/hock joints down should be looked at by a
vet. Another good method instead of just hosing use a Vetrolin mix. Buy a
sprayer (a one gallon one work good...like what they sell at wall mart for
insect/week killer spray). Put in 1 once Vetrolin, 1 table spoon table salt
to 1 gallon of water. Use that to spray down the leg/cut instead of the
water hose. The vetrolin is like betadine and it really cleans out the cut
(but doesn't have the harsh/burn that betadine sometimes does). My vet was
taught this at a clinic at Texas A&M. Works great. You can do it several
times a day and it seems to do more than just a water hose (same action with
the spayer, but the vetrolin/salt helps the cuts).

Hose as much as you can , I have taken care of a couple leg injuries for
owners, but I always heard if on a joint or below the knee have a vet out.

Yet another learning experience for my mare and I want
to be sure to do the right thing for her. She has a
nice horizontal cut (gash) just below her left front
knee but the stable says it doesn't need stitching
(marginal IMHO). She also has some scrapes around her
fetlock and pastern areas. All these wounds are on
the front of her leg.
