Re: [RC] Tying a Horse...food for thought - Bette Lamore

I don't know how a breeder can neglect to teach a foal manners and then provide routine vet care. Trimming must be a real thrill for the farrier if the horse doesn't know how to stand still. We use imprinting at birth but that is far from the real imprinting process. I have many stepped on toes to prove it :-)
When I lead a baby, I will put my arm over the back behind the withers and then tap the baby forward with my hand-- kind of like heels when one is riding plus I lean a little so there is some weight where the saddle will eventually go. My babies can hot walker before they are weaned (follow Mom initially and then go on a bungie walker tie behind her--- they may pull back initially but the clutch slips and just provides a little pressure) They usually catch on real fast. Has saved my shoulder-- better to let them fight themselves than get into a power struggle with me.
One time we had the bareback pads on my 4 month old weanlings and they were all on the hot walker (which goes both ways). Kit told me I should take a pic--- kind of looked like saddles--- and say "we start them young at Whispering Oaks" ;-)
Bette, who just had a gorgeous colt last night!!!!!

If breeders would teach all their babies to tie....it

AMEN. Weanlings should be able to lead, tie, be handled
in anyway, load, unload and ride in a trailer. JMHO
Interesting to note the quality breeders I know of (both
Arab and Paint) already do this because they really care
about the foals they produce and want them to shine in
their prospective fields therefore reflecting on their
breeding program. I have found it's often the backyard
breeder that neglects the "kindergarten years" of their
    foals life.

    Regards,
    Penny
