Howard, you have never seen my mare tied to my trailer. She can run in
circles, buck and otherwise get plenty of exercise when she's in the mood
(like when her buddy leaves her line of sight) I tie her long, she can even
lie down if she wants. So far she hasn't, to my knowledge, tried to roll
while tied, but I bet she could without getting tangled. I have thought
about getting a trailer tie, just haven't afforded it yet. I trained my mare
to stop if she gets tangled up. She will stand with her foot hooked in
something for an hour or more, whatever it takes until someone notices and
gets her unhooked. I know this because she paws the fence, and has more than
one time gotten her shoe hooked and waited for someone to rescue her. It's
true that not every horse is smart or calm or trainable enough to that. I
just got lucky to have a horse that reasons things out a bit more than most
horses, and doesn't panic. Some horses NEVER get over that instinctive "I'M
TRAPPED, I'VE GOT TO GET OUT OF HERE RIGHT NOW NO MATTER WHAT!" feeling when
they hit the end of the rope or get a foot hung up. No matter how much
training a person does, they just have a strong reaction. Every one needs to
find out what works best for their own horse, and provide the safest
    conditions possible. jeri
