Just a PS to what I already said on this subject--on several occasions, I've
brought horses up here to Idaho (and also to central Oregon in previous
years) from Texas and southern California, and have in most cases had them
thrive on being turned out and free-fed. We have numerous California
"transplants" on our place currently, and they seem quite happy with the
"outdoor life," even in cold weather. (We DON'T tend to make the switch in
the dead of winter, if we can help it, though.)
