    Our eldest daughter raised pigs for 4-H projects, and you are right about
    the sow lying down an crushing or smothering at least 1/2 of her litter.  We
    took all kinds of precautions, but never overcame the problem completely.
    One sow even ripped open the skin in the flank of one little piglet.
    Daughter and I did a suturing job, with a topical anesthetic (for sore
    throats), an upholstery needle, and silk thread.  It worked.  Pigs in the
    wild (we've had plenty of them here!) seem to get away with producing 16
    piglets and having them all survive.
