RE: [RC] [RC] Stall Mats - Jonni

    >>>Would like to hear the pros and cons of stall mats.....I am in the
Southern Sierra Mountains of California......have a Castlebrook Wood
Barn.....love my barn......so do the horses......they are coming in just to
    pee!!!!<<<

I love stall mats, and use them under our feeders in the run in shelters,
and used to use them in 1/2 of the corrals we had in So. California. "Most"
horses will not pee directly on them unless they have bedding on them, as
they create a good splatter, and they hate to get their legs wet. But, some
will still go on them. One of the oldest remedies I remember for
redirecting where you want a horse to pee, is put an old car tire on the
spot they have been using. Only a few will still straddle the tire to pee,
then they REALLY get splattered. Often a scoop of dirty shavings from
another horse placed where you want them to go will also help change their
    habits.

I have the large, 4x8 mats that read "Made in Canada" on them. They run
about $40-50, depending where you are, but last a very, very long time. They
are heavy, and hard to move alone. I use a pair of vice grips to grab an
edge and drag it. Had to cut some. Placed them on some blocks, making an
arch in it, and then cut with a mat knife. The arch helped the cut "open
up", to which I did a second cut within the first, and the cut was done. Not
as tough as I thought it would be. We have some in the bed of our truck
also, for the camper to sit on.
