Re: [RC] pullcodes/stats - Ed and Wendy Hauser

I think we all are on the same page here, but coming from different
backgrounds have different solutions to the probelem, Both solutions work
in many cases and one or the other work better in selected cases/

Personally I have used both methods to help solve industrial problems.

My suggestion of working in depth on a smaller number of rides was based on
a feeling that we know quite a bit about how to handle horses on rides and
that the best chance of making rapid gains would happen when details were
    investigated.

By looking at a smaller number of problems follow up would be easier to
obtain. For example: Metabolic pulls could be studied to see if there was
a trend in type or schedule of electrolytes, after ride treatment, etc. One
way to do this is to try to get everyone to report. That will probably not
happen. Telephone calls and other contact to pulls from well studied rides
could yield much data. At least then the researcher would have measures of
the difficulty of the ride and other factors to correlate with the outcome.

It still comes down to money. I feel that given a limited amount of money
the most progress could be made by studing in depth a sample of the
population. The health care industry does this also. Don't forget that
when a health care facility looks at all events, it is paying the workers
    gather and analyze the data.

You report the results of an indepth study of transfusion reactions at your
facility. It sounds like great work that may be applicable across the
country. Interestingly, it is from an indepth study at a small part of the
health care system in the United States. It is very close to my idea of
studying a few rides in depth. The current AERC system would be equivalent
to sending a questionaire to all hospitals in the US, complaining that only
half of them responded, and only allowing them 3 possible responses.
