Re: [RC] trot vs canter - heidi sowards

My older retired gelding always preferred to canter, in
fact I recently took a riding lesson in order to learn to
post. I explained to the instructor that each time I tried
to post, my horse would break into a canter and I was sure
I was doing something wrong. She watched my on my new horse
for one lap around the arena, pronounced herself a genius
and the fastest teacher alive and said, "your other horse
has YOU trained not to trot." It's true, he always
preferred to canter, only trotting more difficult terrain
or to give muscles a break for short periods. My new horse
would hardly break into a canter, even when playing or
being chased by the older horse mentioned above. He has a
great trot, but somewhere along the way (probably me being
on his back) he's deciding that cantering is more fun and
he's becoming good at relaxing and just cantering along,
rarely breaking a sweat until he's cantered for more than 2
miles. Even when playing or me chasing them, he's now
cantering most of time. I do prefer to canter, we ride tons
of hills and the footing is great, so I do let him choose
our gait (not speed, just gait) and he's choosing to canter
more and more, the more he gets in shape, the more he wants
to canter. We're working on faster walking too!!

We just posted a pic to Scott's board, so check out Ash in
    our GREEN state of Washington!!!
