    >We're not talking about "walk" here but a big, busness like ground covering walk is the hardest to teach and also very useful.  And all horses can do it better than we think.
     
    Oh, Dot, THANK YOU for mentioning that.  I've said for years that the walk is the most neglected gait in endurance.  I've sat at more finish lines than I can count, over the last 20 years, waiting for the after-dark 100-milers to arrive, and can tell you that the average speed of 100's walking in the dark is between 2 and 3 mph.  Having experienced a horse with a GOOD walk averaging 5.5 mph walking in the dark, and outdistancing the competition doing so, it is a BIG advantage, especially to a 100-miler, to work on that walk!  And quite frankly, you can do a LOT with a young horse working on LSD and bone density by working hours and hours at a walk....
