    Re: [RC] yawning?? - AprJhn

My free-lease gelding is almost 14. I've known him since he was 2 and a half. When he was started on riding (would say "under saddle", but that would be inaccurate...we rode bareback), his owner would always get off and walk the last 1-3 miles home, giving him a chance to cool out before we got back to the pasture. About .25 or .5 miles from the pasture, Serts would start yawning. Happened every ride, every time. He still does it when he's in sight of home or the trailer. Not sure what the deal is. He was never allowed to eat while being ridden or with the bit in his mouth. (I, on the other hand, encourage it...I want to turn him into at least an LD horse). For Serts, I just think it's a learned behavior that perhaps started with him just anticipating the bit coming out of his mouth. Now he's ridden in a hackamore, but still yawns at the end of rides.
