[RC] Owyhee Canyonland questions - Steph Teeter

I've had lots of questions- figured I'd send answers out to the lists:

Nearest town?: (depends on how you define town:)
Murphy - 12 miles, diesel, cafe, a few groceries
Grandview - 18 miles, diesel, cafe, groceries, hardware
Nampa (big town) - 40 miles, everything

You shouldn't need to go anywhere though once you get here. The chef d'cook will be making daily trips to/from town and is willing to pick up supplies for people. We'll have a signup sheet. We can fill your propane tanks here.

Meals - dinners are provided with the entry, available for purchase for non-riders. If there's enough interest the chef will make sack lunches (for purchase). Breakfast - we'll have coffee/tea/chocolate and muffins/bagels available.

Hay - if you need hay I can get it locally - if you want to purchase/reserve some now, let me know. I can get grass (fescue mix) or alfalfa. I'll have some here if you run out, and will be providing hay at the vet checks.

Water - plenty of water for horses and people. Hydrants and hoses for filling trailers.

Showers! - John is installing 4 showers in the barn, plus a sink for washing up. And laundry too in the house if you need it.

Temperatures - it's been gorgeous - 60's, 70's during the day, haven't seen a cloud in weeks (we could use the rain though), nights have been in the 40's. It could freeze at night during the ride though, so bring plenty of blankets. Gets windy and dusty here sometimes - if you wear contacts or have sensitive eyes you may want to consider protective eye wear. Some of the trails are getting pretty dusty from the lack of rain.

Footing. Over-all the footing isn't too bad, but there are a few very rocky stretches on some of the days. I'm padding my horses (they're being loaned out) - if your horse goes well in easyboots that's probably adequate. There's some sand too and if you're padding, make sure you don't get sand up under the pads.

Farrier - my farrier will be here on Thursday. I can also round up a local farrier for emergencies if necessary.

All days will loop out of camp, so no drivers are necessary. I'll have some 'day trips'  posted for those that want something to do during days off, or don't want to do the entire ride but still want to see some country. There's a Trail Ride on Saturday.

Halloween costume contest on Saturday! I've had to change the trail/days somewhat so Saturday is now the longest day - 55 miles - with all vet checks out. It's not a difficult day - mostly easy trail, good footing, some road, some sand, not much rock. But... consider durability when designing your costume!

p.s. we're headed to the Weiser ride - I can answer questions there too!
