Good name for it. Yep, I've stood and watched these sorts of shoeings, on
young (yearlings!) halter horses who live in stalls and have no reason
whatsoever to wear shoes... <sigh> Hard to blame the shoeing in those
cases for the resultant laminitis, when the poor babies live in close
confinement, have minimal exercise (other than a treadmill to build muscle),
are fed like feedlot steers, and have the "show job" shoeings on growing
baby triple 0 (or smaller) feet with all four nails in place per side, the
soles pared away, and the walls rasped to "perfection." <sigh> Far cry
from putting shoes on fit feet, on horses who exercise, who get appropriate
nutrition for their work level, and who are shod properly to allow for hoof
expansion and athleticism. The lone common denomimator there is the steel
shoes--so it would seem unlikely that they are the cause of the problems,
considering one group of horses is sound and healthy, and the other is
living on antiinflamatories and every joint lube known to man by the time
they are two. Too often those who want to point at the shoes as being the
cause of the problems seem to be unwilling to look at all of the other
causitive factors involved, or at the fact that those horses who do NOT have
other causitive factors stay perfectly sound when shod properly. <sigh>
